A York County man has been arrested following a crash that killed his girlfriend in Indiana last month, according to an abc27 report.
Kevin Bell, 39, of Dover, was arrested at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis on a warrant issued Sept. 28, the report said.
Bell is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, failure to report a dead body, driving with a suspended license and false information, according to a courier-journal report. Bell also reportedly was wanted on a warrant out of Pennsylvania at the time of the accident.
Police reportedly found Bell along a roadside near the Jennings-Ripley County line in southeast Indiana the evening of Sept. 20 three days after the accident.
Bell had lost control of the SUV he was driving along Route 50, where it went over an embankment and slammed into a tree head-on the afternoon of Sept. 17, police said.
His girlfriend, Nikki K. Reed, 37, of Seymour, Indiana, died in the crash. Bell suffered serious leg injuries, and he reportedly stayed with Reed’s body until he was able to crawl to the roadside and hail someone to call 911 for help.
Bell and his girlfriend, 37-year-old Nikki Reed, crashed on Route 50 in Jennings County on Sept. 17. Reed, the front-seat passenger, was killed.
On Sept. 20, police said Bell left the vehicle and was found by a passerby.
Police said Bell lied to the responding trooper about how he sustained his injuries, and he did not initially tell officers he had been in a crash or that Reed was dead inside the vehicle.
After learning that Bell and Reed had been reported missing two days earlier, the trooper found Reed and the SUV, which was not visible from the road.
An autopsy preliminarily confirmed Reed’s fatal injuries were sustained in the crash. No foul play is suspected in her death.
Police had been looking for Bell. He was released from the Indianapolis hospital days before the charges were filed. It was immediately unclear why Bell returned to the hospital.
