WESTBROOK, Maine – A plan to turn a massive area in Westbrook into the Dirigo Shopping Plaza got the green light Tuesday night.
It was a unanimous vote by the board.
J&J Gove Development can now put shovels in the ground on the 500,000-square-foot facility.
The area has served as a gravel pit for the last 76 years.

Engineers predicted that the shopping center would bring in an average of 13,000 more trips to the area each day.
Plans for the shopping center include turning the pit into a lake.
Leaders also plan to open a walking trail around the lake.
Most stores would not open at the mall until 2018.
Before Tuesday night, Walmart was the only confirmed tenant, but developers revealed that Chick-fil-A will be opening a restaurant as well.
