We want Fort Worth’s future to be wilder

More space, more animals and more public involvement make the Fort Worth Zoo’s future bright and much wilder.

We’ve all seen the billboards in recent weeks, the splash of water colors loosely shaped in a rhinoceros form with a hint about “A Wilder Vision.”

The mysterious teaser of an ad campaign has now blossomed, as the Fort Worth Zoo announced a hearty expansion to the attraction. The zoo, as great as it is, is due for some upgrades. Those enhancements are already backed with the $90 million raised from influential Fort Worth donors — mainly Lee and Ramona Bass.

The Basses pledged $30 million toward the $100 million “A Wilder Vision” expansion and have quietly secured another $60 million since 2014.

The zoo is asking the public to donate the last $10 million for the ambitious project. Bringing in those donations will make residents feel more connected to the attractions and help it stand the test of time.

Ramona Bass’ passion gives the cherished zoo an exciting future that includes a first-of-its-kind hippo river.

Fort Worth is lucky. We have wealthy families who love the city as much as we do.

They want to keep it attractive and inviting, making sure Fort Worth doesn’t go without art, music and plenty of giraffes.

We have them to thank for turning downtown into a destination for urban living and nightlife.

We have them to thank for continuously providing features that not only make Fort Worth better for us, but a great tourist city.

And who doesn’t love the idea of 70-foot hippo river?
