Video shows GRPD cruiser theft; man arrested


GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man is in custody for allegedly stealing a Grand Rapids police cruiser then ditching it around the block.

Friday, the Grand Rapids Police Department released video of the incident.

It happened on Oct. 4 when officers were called to the 100 block of Benjamin Avenue SE for a report of a man who had been assaulted with multiple weapons.

While police rushed to help the injured man, a man got inside the cruiser and drove it around the block. He turned the car off at Alexander and Fuller and walked away.

There was no damage to the cruiser.

Grand Rapids police told 24 Hour News 8 on Friday that one person is in custody for the theft, but investigators didn’t release his name.
