Thieves in Burleson targeting pickup tailgates

Pickup drivers in Burleson need to watch their tailgates.

The Burleson Star reports newer pickup trucks are being targeted because of their backup cameras installed, which could reach a value of $1,000 and be shipped overseas.

“Tailgates are fairly easy to remove, especially if they are not locked,” Sgt. Wes Routson told the newspaper. “They can be valuable for resellers.”

It only takes an estimated 30 seconds for a thief to remove a tailgate, he told the newspaper.

He suggested for pickup drivers to lock the tailgate, park in the driveway off the street and to back in.

Last month, residents in the Houston suburb of Summerwood were facing a similar string of tailgate thefts.

One victim found her stolen tailgate being for sale on the website Offer Up, according to KPRC.

Deputies met up with him and arrested the man, who also had a small child and two more tailgates with him, the station reports.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau writes that Texas had the most tailgate thefts from January 2014 to December 2015, with 1,895 claims in 2014 and 1,787 in 2015.
