Fort Kent ~ Northern Maine Medical Center (NMMC) joins the nation in celebrating National Patient Account Management Day; which is part of a week-long celebration, October 16-22, by hospitals, physician offices and others involved with patient account management to recognize and honor the individuals engaged in healthcare administrative management. Now in its twenty seventh year, National Patient Account Management Day was established in 1989, by a proclamation from the U.S. Congress when the American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management (AAHAM) sought to officially recognize healthcare administration management throughout the country. This year’s theme is The Feeling of Pride which AAHAM says addresses recognition of the exemplary work that is conducted by healthcare administrative management teams in hospitals, physician practices and healthcare related industries across the country.
According to Sandy Collin, Revenue Cycle Coordinator and Financial Counselor Supervisor, NMMC is taking the opportunity during the national celebration to raise public awareness about the profession and the important work that these professionals do in a complex healthcare reimbursement environment. Susie Pelletier, Patient Financial Services Manager said, “This is a special week to honor these special people who serve the public as the primary source of information for patients when they call us with questions about a bill.” Pelletier also said the patient account representatives serve as a liaison between patients and insurance providers, and provide guidance to patients who may need assistance in understanding medical costs and navigating through the reimbursement system to identify options for financial solutions that may be needed to cover healthcare expenses. A member of the Patient Financial support team, Brooke Saucier said, “The best part of my day is when I have been successful in helping a struggling patient to find assistance to gain eligibility for funding assistance for their medical bills.” Account Representatives also work with patients with balances they owe, like creating payment plans.
Cindy Daigle, NMMC’s Chief Financial Officer said, “We recognize all too well the complexity of healthcare reimbursement and insurance plans and we are committed to assist patients to make good decisions by providing the right personnel and resources.” In addition to the personal assistance provided upon request, the organization’s website provides multiple resources to assist patients with: determining pricing for the more common tests and procedures, multiple links to major health insurance carriers and government sites, a pricing estimate request form and several resources that address commonly asked questions.
