Josue Munoz would like to kick a 60-yard field goal this season.
While this may sound preposterous for a high school kicker, consider this — Munoz kicked a 57-yarder his sophomore year and followed that up with a 58-yard field goal last season.
The Mansfield Summit kicker has hit a 67-yard field goal in practice, and coach Channon Hall said having a player of that caliber at the high school level is quite a luxury.
“He is a weapon on the football in every since of the word,” Hall said. “Anytime we get past the 50-yard line, there is a great chance we get at least three points because of him. He’s the best I’ve been around, ever.”
So far, Munoz’ longest field goal of the season came on Sept. 1 against Saginaw Chisholm Trail, where he drilled one from 52 yards for the Jaguars.
Munoz said that his goal for this season is to kick one least 60 yards in a game and be perfect when field goal opportunities present themselves.
“My goal personally is to try to be 100 percent on field goals for the rest of the season,” Munoz said. “For our team, I want to make the playoffs and have a good run.”
Munoz has kicked seven field goals and 13 PATs this season and is second on the team in scoring with 34 points, behind running back Derek Johnson.
The Summit kicker is also a member of the student council, an Ambassador for Summit High School and, not surprisingly, plays on the varsity boys soccer team.
The Jaguars have struggled early on in district, losing their first three games.
The first three have been against the top three teams in the district, however, and Munoz said to turn things around and get back on track to shoot for the postseason, it will take a couple of things.
“I believe for Summit to have a strong season and make the playoffs, everybody will have to be on the same page and our team has to work harder for each other,” Munoz said. “We also have to finish opportunities in our games.”
Munoz does plan to play football or soccer in college, but has not yet decided where he will attend.
Summit will host Red Oak at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Vernon Newsom Stadium.
