State police in Harrisburg are issuing a scam alert after con artists contacted five senior citizens in Dauphin County within a month.
Three types of scams were involved and in all cases the instigators demand to be paid with iTunes gift cards, police said.
One was an IRS scam where the victim is contacted by mail, told they owe back taxes and are instructed to call a phone number for further instruction.
In the grandparent scam victims are called and told their grandchild was involved in an accident and must pay medical bills.
The computer virus scam involves a demand for payment to clear a virus from the victim’s computer.
Victims should call their local police department, state police said.
