Skeletal remains found in Fort Worth ID’d as missing Benbrook man

Skeletal remains found Thursday in southwest Fort Worth were identified Monday through dental records as a missing Benbrook man, Fort Worth police confirm.

Chaney Hawthorne, 21, had not been seen or heard from for several days when a family member reported him missing to Benbrook police on Aug. 26.

Five days after the report was made, Hawthorne’s vehicle was found in Bowie County on the northeast edge of the state, Benbrook police have said.

Children discovered the skeletal remains Thursday night, according to homicide Detective Kyle Sullivan.

Sullivan declined to disclose specifically where the remains were found but described it as a field with a partially wooded area in southwest Fort Worth.

Though the cause and manner of death are not yet know, Sullivan said Fort Worth and Benbrook police are investigating the case as a homicide.

Anyone with information about Hawthorne’s death is asked to call Sullivan at 817-392-4340.
