The state Department of Education has released the Pennsylvania School Performance Profile for each public school that serves as a report card of sorts.
To help parents navigate the deluge of information available, we are breaking down each district’s schools and assigning them an overall letter grade based on the academic performance score that the department assigns them.
A school’s grade relies heavily on state assessment scores, but also takes into consideration college readiness tests, industry standards-based assessments, graduation, promotion, and attendance rates, as well as evidence of offering rigorous courses in the calculation.
We are including grades from the past two years for these career and technology high schools for comparison purposes on their performance.
The scores given to these schools are heavily based on Keystone Exams in Algebra I, biology, and English/language arts. These exams are given at the end of a course. So the scores for a student who may take the Algebra I exam in ninth grade or biology in 10th grade, as examples, are banked until they reach 11th grade, and then are used in calculating a high school’s academic performance score.
The department’s deputy secretary for elementary and secondary education Matt Stem declined to provide what score is considered to be a passing score but the last administration, referred to an academic performance score of 70 and up as a passing score.
Below you’ll find a listing of these career and technology high schools in the midstate counties that received a score, along with a letter grade that we assigned to each. Our grades are based on a 100-point scale, with a 90 to 100 considered an A, a 80 to 89 a B, a 70 to 79 a C, a 60 to 69 a D, and an F for a score below 60.
