Rookies Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott playing like broken record

If the NFL gave out an offensive rookie of the year award after five games, Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott would split votes. The Cowboys’ rookies have played like veterans so far, a big reason Dallas stands a surprising 4-1.

Prescott passed for 227 yards and Elliott ran for 134 in the Cowboys’ 28-14 victory over Cincinnati on Sunday.

“Each of those guys has come in and taken advantage of their opportunities,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Monday. “We felt like they were good players when we drafted them, but there is no question they’ve been able to transition quickly. I think it’s probably a result of the experience they had in college. You think about the program those guys came from, and the experience they had, and the production they had, it certainly has helped them transition maybe more smoothly than most. We’re fortunate to have them. For those guys to be playing as well as they are as early in their career is certainly impressive.”

Prescott has passed for 1,239 yards this season, while Elliott has rushed for a league-leading 546. That makes them the first pair of rookies ever to have more than 1,000 passing yards and 500 rushing yards in the first five games.

They’re playing like a broken record every Sunday:

21 Elliott’s back-to-back two-touchdown games marked the 21st time in team history a rookie rusher has had consecutive games with multiple touchdowns.

5 Elliott’s 60-yard touchdown run tied for the fifth-longest by a rookie in team history. DeMarco Murray’s 91-yard touchdown run against the Rams as a rookie in 2011 set the record.

4 Elliott’s 546 yards are the fourth-most by a rookie rusher in NFL history. Only Rams running back Eric Dickerson (645 in 1983), Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson (607 in 2007) and Detroit’s Billy Sims (560 in 1980) had more through five games.

462 Yards Elliott needs to set the team’s rookie record for rushing yards in a season. Tony Dorsett holds the record with 1,007 yards as a rookie in 1977.

3 Elliott became only the third rookie running back in NFL history to have three consecutive games of at least 130 yards. Dickerson and Denver’s Mike Anderson (2000) are the only other rookie running backs to accomplish the feat.

3 Rookie quarterbacks in NFL history drafted in the fourth round or later to start the team’s first five games. Prescott joined Chris Weinke (Carolina, 2001) and Kyle Orton (Chicago, 2005).

2007 The last time a rookie quarterback won at least four of his first five starts. Trent Edwards was the most recent to do it, going 4-1 for Buffalo in 2007.

155 Attempts Prescott has without throwing an interception. That’s a rookie NFL record and the second-longest streak by a quarterback to start a career. New England’s Tom Brady threw 162 attempts before throwing his first interception.

100 Prescott has four consecutive games with passer ratings of 100 or better, the longest streak and most games in franchise history by a rookie.

70 Prescott has completed 70 percent or better of his passes in four consecutive games, tying Tony Romo for the longest streak by a Cowboys quarterback in team history.

3 Rushing touchdowns by Prescott this season. It’s the most by a Cowboys quarterback since Danny White had four in 1983. It’s also the third-most rushing touchdowns by a Cowboys quarterback in a single season.
