GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The skywalk in downtown Grand Rapids will offer ArtPrize spectators a break from the rain this weekend, but not a break from the art.
A stalled area of low pressure will continue to launch clouds and cool rain showers into West Michigan through Sunday.
Luckily, the skywalk — which starts at the DeVos Place Convention Center and links to several other buildings like the Amway Grand and the JW Marriott — will provide a completely dry way to see several noteworthy installations. Visitors can expect to see more than 100 original pieces of art via the skywalk tour.
DeVos Place is the largest venue of the five, featuring exhibits that are already generating attention, like the delicate Butterfly Effect and lifelike Embrace. There are 57 exhibits in total at DeVos Place, many of which lead to the skywalk itself. From there, it is a quick hop to the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, where 16 exhibits are stationed. Some of these are placed elegantly under the giant chandeliers in the hotel, like the sparkling display Imagine If.
From here, it is easy to check off the JW Marriott and Courtyard by Marriott exhibits, which together hold more than 40 pieces of original and exceptional art.
The skywalk is also close to dozens of other venues. The B.O.B. is just a quick dash across the street and features 85 pieces. The Grand Rapids Art Museum is quite close, too, with 15 exhibits on display — some of which have made the Jurors’ Shortlist.
In total, the skyway tour will allow walkers a look at 115 pieces — just a slice of the almost 1,500 that are on display during ArtPrize Eight. While this route will offer a break from the rain and a look at several great venues, it shouldn’t be the only route visitors take.
