A driver who led police on a chase died after the vehicle he or she was in crashed on a Long Beach surface street Tuesday morning, authorities said.
Police provided few details about the crash, which occurred on North Long Beach Boulevard near the 710 Freeway around 6 a.m. It was not immediately clear what prompted Los Angeles Police Department officers to initiate the pursuit.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Long Beach Police Department Sgt. Brad Johnson. Sky5 video showed a white sheet covering a body just outside the white car.
The driver has not been identified.
A white SUV that appeared to have been damaged was in a nearby intersection, the footage showed.
It was not known whether the driver was killed as a result of the crash, though Johnson told KTLA that officers did not use their weapons. He added that he could not confirm if officers used less than lethal force after the collision.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was investigating the pursuit and driver’s death, while Long Beach police investigators were looking into the crash, Johnson said.
No additional information was immediately provided.
