Police apprehended a suspected car thief Saturday night in Glendora after a man had rammed a stolen vehicle into an officer’s patrol car following a short pursuit, authorities said.

The suspect was transported the hospital to treat bite wounds from a police dog following a concerted search effort. The incident began around 7:32 p.m. as a pursuit after an officer encountered a stolen vehicle and the driver refused to pull over, according to Corporal Shawna Celello with the Glendora Police Department.

The driver soon turned his truck toward the officer in pursuit and crashed into his cruiser, police said. Fearing for his life, Celello said the officer fired at the suspect several times, but it was not clear whether he struck him.

The officer was treated for minor injuries to his leg sustained in the collision, according to officials.

The community was on lockdown as authorities searched the suspect, who fled the scene on foot. A multi-pronged search involving helicopters, K-9s and foot patrol eventually located the man in a trailer in a backyard and he was brought into custody shortly before 11 p.m.
