Playstation VR becomes a reality at midnight: lines form in DFW

Christmas is still a few weeks away, but today — Oct. 13 — might as well be a holiday for serious gaming fans.

Sony is unveiling the PlayStation VR (short for “virtual reality”), with a midnight launch, which retailers expect will attract long lines of eager consumers.

The headset is designed to immerse players in the video games built specifically to take advantage of the technology, which is slowly catching on with early adopters (for those confused by the VR concept, think 3-D on steroids). Rather than staring at a screen or a handheld device, the user wears

The Verge has a fairly thorough assessment of the device, which runs about $400 on its own (Sony is also selling it bundled with its PlayStation 4 consoles).

Grapevine-based retailer GameStop is one of a handful of stores participating in the late-night launch, opening around 1,600 of its 4,400 stores across the country, according to The Verge. Best Buy is also staying open late, according to its website, with stores in Arlington, Dallas and Frisco scheduled to participate.

Doors at both GameStop and Best Buy are expected to open at 11 p.m.

According to a GameStop spokeswoman, those angling to pick up a unit tonight would do well to visit the GameStop located within the Heritage Town Center in Euless (1301 W. Glade Rd., Suite 164).

Other well-stocked locations, according to a GameStop spokeswoman, include the GameStop within the Shops of Southlake (1251 E. Southlake Blvd., Suite 351); a Dallas GameStop in Pepper’s Square (14902 Preston Rd., Suite 410, Dallas) and an Irving GameStop, located within Grande Center (2664 North Belt Line Rd., Irving).

Additionally, all four of these GameStop locations will be offering free PlayStation VR demos throughout the weekend.

If you don’t live close to any of these GameStop locations, the retail chain has you covered: Search its website for the store nearest you with the PlayStation VR in stock.
