Pa. teen gets 35 years to life in reported bike theft slaying

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — A teenager has been sentenced to 35 years to life in a shooting death during what authorities called an attempted bicycle theft in a northwestern Pennsylvania last year.

The Erie Times-News reports that 15-year-old Derrys Sanders Jr. apologized Friday as he was sentenced in Erie County Court.

Sanders pleaded guilty in August to first-degree murder in the shooting death of 18-year-old Jacob Pushinsky in Erie in July 2015. Authorities said the defendant, who was 14 at the time, was trying to steal the victim’s bicycle.

Defense attorney Gene Placidi said his client pleaded guilty in part to spare the victim’s family pain. First Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz said Sanders had shown “coldhearted, callous behavior” and said he would continue robbing people when he was released from prison.
