A New Jersey eye doctor who operates 11 Pearle vision centers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on a charge of health care fraud.

Dr. Vincent J. Gamuzza, 30, of Hazelet, N. J., was indicted Oct. 12 on one count of fraud, U. S. Attorney David J. Hickton announced Friday.

Gamuzza owns the franchises for 11 Pearle Vision Centers, including those in Hanover, Camp Hill, Harrisburg and Pennsdale in Lycoming County, said the U.S. attorney’s office. He is currently licensed in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He also owns Liberty Eye Care in Trenton, N.J.

The charges were connected with billings between December 2015 and July of this year.

Gamuzza, a doctor of optometry, is accused of submitting claims to Highmark and Davis Vision for medical services that were not rendered, Hickton said.

He was arrested Thursday in New Jersey and released on bail Friday, said a court spokeswoman. He will appear at 2 p.m. today before a federal magistrate in Pittsburgh.

If convicted, Gamuzza faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both. The FBI and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Office of Inspector General conducted the investigation.
