OL Tyron Smith gets a rest; Dez Bryant making progress

Left tackle Tyron Smith was a notable absentee from practice Thursday.

The Cowboys’ All-Pro said afterward he had a scheduled day off and expects to return Friday.

Smith returned to the lineup last week against Cincinnati after missing the previous two games with a bulging disc in his back. Smith had started 55 consecutive regular-season games before being sidelined.

Asked before practice about keeping Smith out of practice, coach Jason Garrett said: “If there’s value in it, we’ll do it. We’re just not going to do it for the sake of doing it. Tyron needs snaps. He needs practice. When he’s able to practice, he’s going to practice.

“When he’s not, we’ll say, ‘Hey, try to get your reps another way,’ whether it’s walk-through or in the film room or in the meeting room.”

Wide receiver Dez Bryant practiced for the second consecutive day on a limited basis. Bryant is not expected to play Sunday in Green Bay, but he continues to make progress from a hairline fracture in his right knee that has sidelined him the past two games.

“He’s making great progress,” offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said of Bryant.

In other practice developments, cornerback Morris Claiborne practiced on a limited basis after turning his ankle during Wednesday’s practice. Defensive end David Irving returned for his first practice on a limited basis since sustaining a concussion in the Week 4 game at San Francisco.

Kicker Dan Bailey (back) fully participated for the second consecutive day.

Cornerback Orlando Scandrick (hamstrings) and running back Lance Dunbar (knee) were out and are not expected to play on Sunday. Swing tackle Chaz Green (foot) also remains sidelined.
