Fort Kent ~ With the documented successes and benefits of the completed Emergency Department upgrade in 2015, Northern Maine Medical Center (NMMC) is now eager to meet the challenge of planning for an upgrade in the Operating Room. Peter Sirois, NMMC Chief Executive Officer said, “We live in an era of high healthcare costs and we believe strongly in always challenging ourselves to find ways to reduce the high costs of healthcare while embracing best practices and staying focused on patient-centered care. In order to maximize all of our resources, changing the footprint of the Operating Room and centralizing the service in one location will result in multiple benefits”. The current surgical area and support services already provide an environment for award winning patient-centered care as demonstrated by the Joint Commission Top Performer recognition in surgical care and the Press Ganey recognition for surgical infection prevention bestowed on NMMC this year, however, the fact remains that benefits will most certainly be gained with some changes being proposed for the Operating Room renovation.

With best practices at the forefront of the planning committee’s priorities, the renovation proposed will consolidate all surgical related services in a central area. Currently, outpatient procedural areas, endoscopy suites and sterilization services are located on different floors and at opposite ends of the building. Michael Saucier, Chief Anesthetist and OR Unit Manager said, “Although the current design is functional, based on the current proposal, we have identified several benefits which could be gained such as: providing enhanced productivity and efficiencies in workflow, improved patient accommodations and conveniences, better utilizing of technology and deployment of staff.” The proposal on the table offers opportunities to create efficiencies that cannot be attained with the current layout of the OR, sterilization and endoscopy service.
As part of the planning for the renovation, net proceeds from NMMC’s November 5 annual dinner and auction are designated to support the renovation project. The masquerade themed event includes appetizers and a delectable four course dinner followed by an auction featuring exceptional and unique gift items, to include: outdoor furniture, local gift certificates, handcrafted items and much more. Tickets may be purchased prior to the event by calling event coordinator, Robin Damboise, at 207-834-1307.
More details about the Operating Room project will be released in the next several months. To learn more about NMMC’s many services, to make a donation or to learn about volunteer opportunities, visit www.nmmc.org and Like us on Facebook!
