Firefighters battled a brush fire that scorched 50 acres in Kahikinui near Manawainui Bridge on Piilani Highway on Maui.
At 3:30 p.m. Sunday, firefighters responded to multiple calls from motorists who observed a rapidly spreading fire while they drove the back way out from Hana.
Firefighters arrived and found a large area of brush burning on the makai side of the highway, between mileposts 27 and 28, the same area where a brush fire burned approximately 6,000 acres in February, according to a news release from the Maui Fire Department.
Piilani Highway was closed for approximately two hours while firefighters battled the brush fire, which threatened to jump over to the mauka side of the highway.
Fire crews fully contained the fire to the makai side of the highway at about 6:30 p.m. The fire department said there were some smoldering hot spots within the blackened area but they did not pose a threat.
Two water tankers responded to the blaze as well as two helicopters that conducted water drops.
No structures were threatened and no injuries were reported.
Firefighters checked the site throughout the night and are expected to mop up the area this morning.
