Former Bears tight end Martellus Bennett said Jay Cutler is not a leader, and called his former teammates the reason the Bears didn’t win more while he was in Chicago.
“We just had a bunch of bitches on the roster — that’s why we didn’t win games — and coaches liked the bitches,” he said in a clip teased by ESPN’s “E:60,” which is airing a segment on Bennett and his brother Michael.
On Cutler, he was blunt.
“Some people that you want to be a leader are not the guy that’s the leader,” he said. “And everyone in the locker room knows that this is not the leader, but this is what you want the face of the team to look like.”
Cutler hasn’t played since Game 2 because of a sprained right thumb.
Bennett is thriving with the Patriots, to whom he was traded in March after GM Ryan Pace and coach John Fox decided his personality didn’t fit their locker room . He caught three touchdown passes Sunday against the Browns, in quarterback Tom Brady’s first game back.
Bennett refused to speak to Chicago reporters during the second week of preseason games, during which the Bears trained in Foxborough, Mass.
The “E:60” story airs Wednesday.
