Looking at playoff scenarios for Keller ISD, Northwest ISD teams

There really is no official designation for it. But when the football season reaches the second half of October, the express run to the playoffs begins.

The races in District 6-5A, 3-6A and 5-6A will start to become more clear once this week has concluded. In fact, postseason berths will be wrapped up and programs can start pushing toward potential district championships.

So this is a good time to start looking what is in play for each of these districts.

District 6-5A: Justin Northwest (7-0, 4-0) would clinch the eighth postseason berth in school history (the school was founded in 1948) with a win Friday at Saginaw Chisholm Trail. Should that happen, then the Texans will then have a chance to play Aledo, which plays White Settlement Brewer on Friday, for the district championship on Oct. 28 at the NISD Stadium.

Regardless of that scenario, the big question for this program is finding a way to win that elusive first postseason game. Saginaw Boswell and Azle appear to be the others that have the advantage of advancing to the postseason along with the Texans and Bearcats. V.R. Eaton (1-6, 0-4) needs to win at Azle to give itself a chance. If not, the Eagles are eliminated.

District 3-6A: This district works with a positive/negative 14 points tiebreaker. Abilene (7-1, 4-0) has already wrapped up a playoff berth. Now, the Eagles are going for the outright district championship. They have a bye with games remaining with Keller and Keller Timber Creek. Keller Fossil Ridge (5-2, 2-1) is coming off its bye and has games remaining with Keller Central, Weatherford and Keller.

A win Thursday over the Chargers only moves them closer. Timber Creek (5-2, 2-1) also puts itself in a good position with a win Friday against Keller. That would give them wins over the teams that are behind them, including Haltom and Weatherford. Central (3-4, 2-1) already has a win over Keller. If it loses to Fossil Ridge, it really won’t impact the Chargers’ situation. The meeting with Timber Creek on Oct. 28 could tell a lot more.

The worst-case scenario is that the Chargers drop these next two and beat Haltom in the finale to make the playoffs, because they would have beaten the three teams below them in Haltom, Keller and Weatherford. For Haltom, the Buffalos (4-4, 1-3) are in a tough spot. The loss to Timber Creek really hurt. The Buffalos can stay in if they beat Weatherford on Friday and then Keller Central on Nov. 4. However, other things have to happen to help them.

District 5-6A: For Northwest Byron Nelson (2-5, 2-2), the Bobcats’ result Friday at Carroll has some bearing, but not the ultimate bearing, at where they are at in terms of making the playoffs. They still have to play at Flower Mound Marcus on Oct. 28.

With wins already pocketed against Euless Trinity – the trump card – and Lewisville, Nelson can lose to Carroll, beat Marcus, and defeat Hurst L.D. Bell in the Nov. 4 finale in order to give themselves a chance to make the postseason. But if the Bobcats lose the next two weeks, their hopes pretty much end.
