KDPS: Hoarding helps fuel Kalamazoo house fire

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say hoarding conditions hampered firefighters efforts to put out a blaze at a Kalamazoo home.

A passerby reported the fire at a home in the 700 block of Skinner Avenue around 12:15 a.m. Monday.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says a large amount of items both inside and outside the home caused the fire to spread quickly and made it difficult for firefighters to knock down the flames.

Authorities say the home was not occupied and was listed as condemned. As a result, firefighters took a defensive fire attack.

It took more than an hour to get the fire under control and several more hours to control hot spots, according to a release from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety. Excavation equipment was also brought in to raze the home and fully extinguish the fire.

A nearby business received minor water damage due to the large amounts of water used to put out the house fire.

Police say the homeowner happened to be at the property at the time of the fire, but was not inside. No one was injured.

The Kalamazoo Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.

Anyone with information is asked to call the fire marshal at 269.337.8101, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 269.337.8994 or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100.
