K-9 bites suspect after Kalamazoo police chase

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A man was arrested after leading police on a chase in Kalamazoo following a hit-and-run crash.

Officers were initially called to the area of W. North Street and N. Rose Street around 12:45 p.m. Thursday on a report of a hit-and-run crash. The victim followed the supect’s vehicle until he allegedly stopped, got out of the car and pointed a gun at the victim before driving away.

The victim continued to follow the suspect, identified by police as a 28-year-old Galesburg man, until Kalamazoo Public Safety officers arrived and pulled him over.

The suspect initially stopped but then got back in his vehicle and took off again.

Police say they chased the suspect for several minutes until he stopped on Catherine Street and W. Main Street.

The suspect got out of the vehicle and reached into his pockets at which point police sent a K-9 toward him. The K-9 bit the suspect and officers were able to arrest him.

The man was taken to Bronson Hospital for minor injuries. After treatment, he was taken to Kalamazoo County Jail on charges of resisting an officer, fleeing and eluding, felonious assault, and possession of controlled substances including heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine.

Police say the gun the man had turned out to be an airsoft-style handgun.
