Justin Northwest rallies to top Saginaw Boswell and stay unbeaten

After three lead changes in the first half Thursday at Northwest ISD Stadium, timely defense by Justin Northwest and the patience of quarterback Prince Mavula helped lead a second-half charge in a 31-21 District 6-5A win against Saginaw Boswell.

Mavula completed 24 passes for 318 yards and two scoring strikes to wide receiver Gavin Holmes.

But it was Mavula’s patience in the pocket and some salty defensive plays from defensive back Tanner Savoy and linebacker Caden McDonald that helped keep the Texans perfect on the season.

“Boswell played hard all the way through,” Northwest coach Bill Poe said. “Our defense came up with some big plays tonight, Tanner with those interceptions just killed some momentum for them and Caden McDonald on the pick-six, those plays probably were the difference.”

Northwest (7-0, 4-0 6-5A) helped break up a three-way tie atop the district and now sits a half-game ahead of Aledo, which plays Haslet Eaton on Saturday .

Boswell (4-3, 3-1) couldn’t keep pace in the second half after several turnovers left the Pioneers with little to show for a strong effort.

Running back Damon Williams carried 39 times for 184 yards and one touchdown.

Boswell Freshman quarterback Brayden Thomas completed 13 passes for 215 yards including TD passes to Breshun Berry and Isiah Mayfield.

But Savoy seemed to have Thomas’ number with three drive-killing interceptions and McDonald had a 54-yard interception return for a touchdown.
