Husson football team earns fifth straight win

CASTLETON, Vermont — Cory Brandon threw a 78-yard touchdown pass to Kadeem Edge in the third quarter and Ellis Throckmorton returned an interception 31 yards for a score just 54 seconds later as Husson University built a 22-point lead en route to a 43-21 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference football victory over Castleton University on Saturday afternoon.

Deon Wiggins snapped a 14-14 tie with an 83-yard kickoff return early in the second quarter and Husson picked up a safety late in the half.

John Smith rushed for 198 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries for the 5-1 Eagles, who are 3-0 in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference.

His 47-yard TD run opened the scoring but Moe Harris returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards to tie it.

Robenson Saintard scored on a 1-yard run for Husson but Castleton tied it when Soren Pelz-Walsh caught a 14-yard TD pass from Mitchell Caron to draw the Spartans level again.

Pelz-Walsh caught another TD pass from Caron, this one a 26-yarder, late in the third quarter to pull Castleton within 36-21 but Saintard capped the scoring with a 3-yard run.

Obie Christmas gained 91 yards on 14 carries and Brandon completed 11 of 20 passes for 177 yards. Wiggins caught three passes. Throckmorton had a team-high five tackles and Elvin Suazo Jr. posted 2½ sacks among his four tackles.

Caron completed 12 of 31 passes for 107 yards and Pelz-Walsh and Ryan Barry had three receptions each for the 2-4 Spartans (2-1 ECFC). Harris was the top rusher with 20 yards on 10 carries and Jakob Trautwein and Darren Callan had 15 and 12 tackles, respectively.

Endicott 35, MMA 14

At Castine, Joe Kalosky tossed three touchdown passes as Endicott scored 35 unanswered points after Maine Maritime Academy’s James Ferrar had opened the scoring with a 15-yard run.

Endicott has won all five meetings between the two programs.

Lavante Wiggins tied it 7-7 with a 33-yard run and the Gulls took the lead for good on Michael Scherer’s 10-yard TD pass to Greg Ruff with 1:23 left in the half.

Kalosky threw TD passes of 10 yards to Jake Pelletier and 27 yards to Conor Crotty in the third period before hooking up with Zach DeNike on a 78-yarder in the fourth quarter.

Corey Creeger capped the scoring for MMA with a 2-yard run.

Kalosky completed 8 of 11 passes for 203 yards and Scherer was 8-for-10 for 114 yards. Pelletier and Crotty each caught four passes.

Wiggins rushed for 65 yards on 11 carries. John Pendergast and William Rivera were each in on 10 tackles for the 3-3 Gulls (3-0 NEFC).

Creeger completed 10 of 26 passes for 195 yards and rushed for 95 yards on 32 carries. Ferrar ran for 68 yards on eight carries.

Joel Bennett caught five passes and Jordan Susi had three. Cody Chapman and Robert Bradley Jr. had nine and eight tackles for 1-4 MMA (0-3 NEFC).
