Hold the laughs: Criminals don clown masks as disguises

The new face of crime could have a round, red nose.

Reports are growing of suspects wearing clown masks while committing crimes.

Longview Police say a suspect with a clown mask robbed a business at 1600 block of Judson Road on Monday morning, KLTV reports. The suspect then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.

In Buffalo, police say a man in clown mask robbed a pizza delivery man Saturday night, WKBW reports.

Closer to home, Gainesville Police arrested three male juveniles Thursday in connection with burglary of a habitation.

Police say on Wednesday, a woman woke up from sleeping on her couch to find three intruders in her house, two with clown masks. They then shot her in the face and arm with a BB gun. Police said later the incident was likely caused by tension with the woman’s son.

“We would like to take this opportunity to address the use of clown costumes as as we approach Halloween,” Gainesville Police wrote in a statement. “While it is not illegal to wear a clown costume, we would ask that members of our community take into consideration recent events locally and nationally as they select costumes for Halloween festivities.”

Also, Target announced it was pulling clown masks from its shelves for Halloween.

Costume chain Halloween Express told Eye Opener online sales for clown masks have skyrocketed up 300 percent from a year ago.

“In the top 10, eight of them are ‘evil’ clown masks this season whereas last year, five of the top 10 were ‘evil,’” a chain spokesperson Brad Butler told the station.
