Madawaska – Angela Higgins, Human Resource Generalist, for the Town of Madawaska, recently attended Human Resource Day 2016 hosted by the MDOL on October 14th.. Higgins along with over 100 Human Resource professionals throughout the State had the opportunity to hear first-hand from the MDOL professionals.
Commissioner Jeanne Paquette introduced her staff of Bureau Directors. The Directors gave segments in the morning which were titled “Did you know?” Several Directors from the various Bureaus at MDOL shared information with the attendees regarding recruitment, employment, record keeping, employment laws, safety, training, etc. This portion of the workshop was extremely informative and well presented.
The new Overtime Law which is to take effect on December 1, 2016 was discussed in detail by Pam Megathlin, Director of the Bureau of Labor Standards. The new Overtime Law will require all employees on salary making $913 per week or less will be eligible for overtime pay if they work over a 40 hour week.
With the upcoming Overtime Law fast approaching, HR attendees were informed as to what is expected of employers with the MDOL, including classifications for Exempt employees, record keeping, and all that is required to reach MDOL standards.

Higgins stated, “Madawaska is prepared for the new Overtime Law beginning Dec. 1, 2016. The HR Day 2016, Directors of the MDOL answered a lot of questions and we are ready to move forward”
Paquette, who herself began her career in Human Resources mentioned how important solid human resource programs are for all businesses in Maine.
