Former Hawaii basketball big man Stefan Jankovic has been released by the Miami Heat, Miami media reported today.
The Heat signed Vashil Fernandez to replace Jankovic on the 20-man preseason roster. The Heat have to narrow their roster to 15 by the start of the NBA regular season.
Jankovic told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser via text message that he is weighing his options between being assigned to Miami’s D-League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, or trying his hand in Europe.
“I got some time now to make a decision,” Jankovic wrote. He said he’s considering a trip back to Hawaii before he decides.
Jankovic, who was signed to a partially guaranteed contract off the Heat’s summer league squad, suffered a right foot sprain just before fall training camp. He appeared briefly in a single Heat preseason game against San Antonio last week, going scoreless on 0-for-2 shooting in four minutes.
Jankovic was named the Big West Player of the Year in 2015-16 and helped UH to its first NCAA Tournament victory.
