Grand Re-Opening at Mary Free Bed


GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Mary Free Bed celebrated its grand re-opening on Thursday, October 13th. The ceremony was attended by Governor Rick Snyder, Mayor Rosalyn Bliss, and Senator Peter MacGregor, along with Mary Free Bed guild members, trustees, staff, patients, and friends from the community. The event marks Mary Free Bed’s 125th anniversary of bringing hope through rehabilitation.

Celebrating the completion of the second phase of the hospital’s $66.4 million expansion, the event was highlighted by the announcement that the recently constructed hospital would be named the “Bernedine Keller & Barbara Hoffius Center”, honoring two long-time Mary Free Bed administrators. The $42 million building brings the total number of private inpatient beds on the campus to 167.


The building houses the Wheelchair & Adaptive Sports Department, one of the largest programs of its kind in the country, along with Recreation Therapy and a private-room Pediatric Inpatient Unit, with areas for specialized therapy.Mary Free Bed employs more than 1,100 employees, including doctors, therapists, and nurses. In the 2016 fiscal year, Mary Free Bed served more than 1,600 inpatients and 30,000 outpatients.
