FW South Hills rallies from deficit to edge Arlington Heights

That Fort Worth South Hills dug itself out of a big hole on Friday night to stay unbeaten was impressive.

But that they did it against what appeared to be a defense as stout as the concrete of the venerable Farrington Field was stunning.

Quarterback Trey Jones and running back Kyran Jackson put the Scorpions on their backs in finally finding cracks in Fort Worth Arlington Heights’ defense to lead South Hills back from 14 down in the third quarter to a 25-21 District 7-5A victory.

Jones carried 25 times for 139 yards — every one of them in the second half — and two touchdowns. Jackson had 65 yards rushing and two touchdowns, including the game winner, an 11-yard scoring run with 1:40 left.

The Scorpions (6-0, 3-0 district) drove 46 yards in six plays and 1 minute, 45 seconds on the winning drive, kept alive by Jackson’s 23-yard gain on a screen pass from Jones on third-and-15.

Da’Jour Traylor had 62 yards and a 37-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter that gave Heights a 14-0 lead that looked secure, considering the demonstration the Yellow Jackets defense put on in the first half.

Heights (4-2, 2-1) held the Scorpions to 38 first-half yards, with the Yellow Jackets’ front dominating the line of scrimmage.

Jones, though, took the game over, propelling the Scorpions to 232 second-half yards and four touchdowns in the final 16 minutes.

South Hills’ defense, meanwhile, was equal to its counterpart, holding Heights to 113 yards in the final 24 minutes.

After South Hills came within one, Heights answered with quarterback Jaiden Zachery’s 34-yard TD pass to William Scott. Zachery also had a 4-yard TD run to open the scoring in the second quarter.

Jones, however, hurried his team down the field on the ensuing possession, running for 50 of the Scorpions’ 60 yards on a seven-play drive capped by Jackson’s 10-yard TD run that moved South Hills within two points, 21-19.
