Frenzy preview: West Catholic-Catholic Central rivalry returns

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — It’s Week 8 of high school football, and the competition for conference titles is heating up.

Football Frenzy is shining the spotlight on these games Friday:

Grand Rapids West Catholic Falcons (6-1) at Grand Rapids Catholic Central Cougars (7-0)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Outlook: The longtime rivalry between Catholic Central and West Catholic will be renewed after a six-year hiatus. The two teams haven’t played since 2009 after the City League folded, but the latest realignment placed both teams in the O-K Blue Conference. Both teams are currently 4-0 in conference play and gunning for a conference championship. West Catholic, the three-time defending state champions, won the Blue last season, while the Cougars claimed top honors in the O-K Gold.

Catholic Central is 7-0 for the first time since 2012, when it went unbeaten in the regular season.

The Falcons suffered their lone loss to Zeeland West, but have recovered to win four in a row. During that span, Their defense has posted two shutouts and allowed only 14 points. The Falcons have only three losses the past three seasons.

This will be the 48th meeting between West Catholic and Catholic Central, with both teams splitting the last four matchups.

Mona Shores Sailors (4-3) at Muskegon Big Reds (6-1)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Outlook: Mona Shores is in a must-win situation as it visits neighborhood rival Muskegon. The Sailors have to win their final two games to automatically qualify for the state playoffs for a fourth straight season. Mona Shores dropped three in a row before winning its last three game in impressive fashion.

The Big Reds lost to Lincoln (Ill.) Stevenson in Week 2 for their lone defeat of the season and have won five consecutive games since. Muskegon has been dominant during that span, outscoring its opponents 296-28. It is hoping to avenge a 21-18 loss to the Sailors a year ago.

Montague Wildcats (6-1) at Muskegon Oakridge Eagles (6-1)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Outlook: Oakridge and Montague are vying for the top spot in the West Michigan Conference as they square off for the 53rd time.

Oakridge, which has already secured its 12th straight playoff appearance, has won six in a row after a season-opening 30-6 loss to defending Division 8 state champion Muskegon Catholic Central.

Montague, 17-2 the past two seasons, defeated Oakridge 36-29 last season, but had lost four straight games before that. The Wildcats were upset by North Muskegon 14-6 two weeks ago, but rebounded to throttle Hart 61-0 last week. Montague’s defense is allowing less than 10 points per game.
