Former NFL player Dennis Byrd was killed Saturday when his vehicle was struck by another car on an Oklahoma highway. He was 50.
Byrd, who played for the New York Jets from 1989 until a devastating injury ended his pro career in 1992, died after an oncoming vehicle crossed the center of a highway north of Claremore, Oklahoma, striking his car, authorities said.
A Jets defensive lineman, Byrd suffered a broken vertebra during a game with the Kansas City Chiefs, overcoming the odds to recover from the injury but never playing again.
He went on to write a book about the experience, “Rise and Walk: The Dennis Byrd Story,” which was later made into a television movie starring Peter Berg as Byrd.
