The fiery crash that closed Interstate 81 in Silver Spring Township for several hours Wednesday occurred when a southbound passenger vehicle crossed over the median into the northbound lanes.
State police at Carlisle said a tractor-trailer heading north attempted to move onto the shoulder to avoid the vehicle but was struck, which caused it to hit another northbound tractor-trailer.
The driver of the passenger vehicle, whose name has not been released, was flown by Life Lion to Penn State Hershey Medical Center. A passenger was taken by Hampden EMS to the Medical Center as well.
The drivers of the two trucks were not injured, police said.
The crash occurred about 10:58 a.m., and the highway not not reopened in both directions until 2:10 p.m.
