OGDEN, UTAH (KTSU/CNN) – Questions remain about why a Utah father would leave his 5-year-old daughter alone all night on a college campus.
Surveillance cameras captured the child fending for herself with just a blanket outside in the cold all night.
The little girl was left alone early Sunday morning in with temperatures around 30 degrees.
“She got scared,” said the child’s mother, Gena. “She was going, ‘Daddy!’ No one was there. She said she just had her blanket and kind of waited until daylight.”
Looking over the footage, Fred Frazier, security manager at Ogden-Weber Tech College, said, “She stays right where she was told to stay.”
The child’s mother said the father “told her to shut up, and lay down and go to sleep.”
An Ogden-Weber Applied Security employee found the girl about 7:30 a.m., hurt and crying.
“Actually, it was heartbreaking for him to see a little girl running along alone by herself,” Frazier said of the employee, “That’s when he got very concerned, and she was shivering and cold.”
Ogden police jumped into the investigation and figured out that the girl’s father, seen on surveillance footage, left her.
Lt. Tom Scott with the Ogden Police said no one knows why.
“We don’t really know what purpose he would take the child, if there’s some drug-induced psychosis,” Scott said. “Right now, we’re waiting to interview the father.”
Meanwhile, the girl’s mother wants answers about why her daughter was left in the cold, and why the girl’s father hasn’t been confronted.
The girl was running toward the security officer for help when she fell and scraped her hand. Her mother said she was traumatized by the whole ordeal.
Ogden Police said the Department of Child and Family Services is involved in the investigation, and the man could be charged with felony child abandonment or abuse.
