Election Day food drive needs volunteers

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Hillside Sports Annual Pumpkin Walk is Saturday Oct. 29. There will be pumpkin carving from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a pumpkin walk from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Area Youth Sports (AYS) building, formally LFHS. We will supply all pumpkins and carving tools, the pumpkins will be hollowed out and ready to carve when you get there.

If anyone has old Halloween decorations they no longer want or will let us borrow for the day we would be glad to accept the generosity.

As always we will have hot mulled and cold apple cider and hot chocolate to enjoy on your walk, with countless goodies for all to enjoy. Donations to continue this tradition are gladly accepted but not necessary. Fun and food and goblins, costumes encouraged! — No name, Jay.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have over 30 racing trophies that I would like to give away for free. I have all sizes and the tops can be changed to any sport. They would work well for children’s awards. — G. Leavitt, Auburn.

ANSWER: There are many community organizations that could certainly make use of your trophies. You might try contacting the SHAREcenter in Auburn, they recycle items that teachers, schools and organizations can use for their programs. They are located at 33 Industry Ave in Auburn and can be reached by calling (207)333-6671. If readers know of anyone who could use these trophies, please contact Sun Spots.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have a huge paper wasps’ nest and would like someone to have it. I can be reached at (207)336-2305. — Betty McAlister, Buckfield.

ANSWER: Paper wasps gather fibers from dead wood which they mix with saliva and use to construct these large nests. They are fill with combs and could make a great science lesson for an interested teacher. There are other uses as well, some sources claim that hanging a false nest will deter new wasps from building nearby, as they are very territorial. If anyone is interested, please contact Betty.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: When you head to the polls this Election Day, please bring along a food donation to help feed the hungry in Lewiston-Auburn. Skelton, Taintor & Abbott and Sun Media are sponsoring a food drive this election day, November 8, to benefit Hope Haven Gospel Mission, Trinity Jubilee Center and food pantries in the Lewiston and Auburn school systems. Nonperishable food items can be dropped off at all seven polling locations in Lewiston/Auburn.

Maine has the highest rate of food insecurity out of all of the New England and mid-Atlantic states. Twenty percent of Maine kids live in poverty, and 208,000 Mainers live with food insecurity. Here in our community Hope Haven Gospel Mission, the Trinity Jubilee Center, and the school-based food pantries provide hot meals, groceries, shelter, and more to people struggling to get by. Join us in meeting our goal of collecting 10,000 pounds of food this Election Day.

Volunteers are also needed. Each polling site needs two volunteers to accept food donations, thank donors, and make sure the food is organized and everything goes smoothly. If you have an hour or two to spare, we would love your help. Email Lynda at lcook@sta-law.com if you can help. Thank you.
