El Monte police are investigating on Monday after a man with distinctive tattoos tried to abduct a 9-year-old boy from his school, according to authorities.

The young elementary school student was waiting for his mother to pick him up from La Primaria School in the 4200 block of Gilman Road around 2 p.m. on Thursday. The man approached the child while he waited, police said.

The man then grabbed the boy by the wrist and attempted to drag him away, according to officials.

“He said he was there to pick up the boy with his mother’s permission,” said Sgt. Roger Cobian of the El Monte Police Department. “The boy was very suspect of that and at that moment the man reached out and grabbed the boy’s wrist.”

The attacker fled the scene after the child broke free following a struggle. The boy suffered minor scratches to his arm but was otherwise unharmed.

“He was shaken up, but luckily he was brave enough to come forth and give a very excellent description,” said Cobian.

The attempted kidnapper is described as a 6-foot to 6-foot-2-inch white man in his 30s, around 180 pounds. He was a dragon tattoo on the back of his head, “Maria” tattoo on his left neck, a skull tattoo on his upper chest and pock marks on both cheeks, according to police.

The man was last seen wearing a black shirt, black pants and reddish shoes. He is known to frequent the area of 605 Freeway and San Gabriel Reservoir at Ramona Boulevard, police stated in a media release.

Anyone with information is asked to call the El Monte Police Department at 626-580-2100.
