Drunk driver jailed for 7th time in Kootenai County
Paul A. Hendzel
DALTON GARDENS, Idaho -
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office reports a man is in jail on DUI charges for the seventh time after being arrested Saturday night.
Just before 10 p.m., deputies were sent to the area of Hanley Avenue and Government Way for reports of a reckless driver that had reportedly hit several vehicles and was all over the road. Idaho State Police had received a similar report of the same pickup on I-90 minutes before.
Deputies found the pickup speeding down Rude Street. The driver pulled into a person’s yard, did a U-turn around a tree and sped past a sheriff’s sergeant into a driveway nearby when he tried to pull him over. That driver was later identified as 54-year-old Paul A. Hendzel, of Dalton Gardens. He got out of the truck and did not listen to the sergeant’s directions initially, but eventually was taken into custody when other deputies arrived on the scene.
The original witness told deputies Hendzel had driven his pickup through the center of the roundabout at 4th Street and Kathleen Ave., causing damage to vegetation. Coeur d’Alene police took a collision report.
Hendzel was booked into Kootenai County Jail for a felony charge of excessive blood alcohol content (above .20) driving under the influence. The sheriff’s office says Hendzel had been booked into the jail six times before for DUI offenses going back to 1989.
