Detour for Park Avenue bridge work in Hershey starting soon

Park Avenue at the bridge over Spring Creek will be closed for about a month for utility work starting Oct. 24, PennDOT says.

Closure of the road, which is also Route 743, will allow Verizon and Pennsylvania American Water Company to relocate utilities in advance of bridge replacement scheduled to start in January.

Park Avenue will be closed just north of Trinidad Avenue to the south side of the bridge.

Drivers will be able to get to ZooAmerica from Route 422, and from Hersheypark Drive, drivers will be able to get to Tanger Outlets. The detour route is to take Routes 743 and 422 and Hersheypark Drive.

Park Drive carries about 11,500 vehicles per day. The road should reopen by Thanksgiving, PennDOT said.

PennDOT has contracted with J.D. Eckman Inc. of Atglen to replace the superstructure of the bridge, at a cost of $2,995,254.
