Crowley defense comes up big in win over Cleburne

Defense shined at Yellow Jackets Stadium as Crowley shocked Cleburne on Friday night.

Eagles running back Jamerian Biscoe scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with 1:30 left in the third quarter and Crowley batted down a Hail Mary pass in the final seconds to defeat Cleburne 28-21.

Cleburne’s drive with 3:10 left was ended by an interception by Crowley’s Marcus Embry, but the Yellow Jackets still had one more chance at sending the game into overtime.

Jordan Gann took a Crowley punt and returned it 33 yards, then made a 12-yard reception to set up Cleburne at the Crowley 40 with two seconds left. But Tre’Von Bradley’s Hail Mary attempt came up short of the goal line.

“I have all the faith in the world in our defense and secondary, and they just came up big in the second half play after play,” Crowley coach Chris James said. “We overcame a lot. That was a tough one there.”

Crowley (5-1, 3-0 9-5A) won its fourth consecutive game for the first time since winning five in a row in 2013, when the Eagles last started 3-0 in district play. That year, they went 10-2 and 6-1 in district.

The Eagles forced Cleburne to punt on the first drive then went 83 yards in 10 plays, capped by a 7-yard touchdown run by Rodrick Williams for a 7-0 lead, 4:58 into the first quarter.

Cleburne answered with a six-play, 70-yard drive as Tre’Von Bradley scored on a 6-yard touchdown run to tie it at 7-7 with 2:59 in the first quarter.

Crowley took a 14-7 lead on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Chris James to Jarel Miller with 12 seconds left in the opening frame.

The Yellow Jackets tied it 14-14 on the ensuing drive, going 79 yards on 10 plays and capped by Bradley’s 30-yard pass to Jordan Gann with 9:11 left in the halfin the second.

Crowley forced fumbles on back-to-back Cleburne drives. Two plays after the first Cleburne fumble, Williams ran up the middle untouched for a 60-yard touchdown anda 21-14 lead, which Crowley took into the break.

Cleburne tied it at 21-21 with 7:50 in the third on Bradley’s 37-yard touchdown run.

Biscoe had 112 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Williams added 109 yards and two scores. James rushed for 71 yards and threw for 133 yards on 14-of-16 passing and a TD.

The Eagles gained 437 yards of offense, 304 rushing, and held Cleburne (4-2, 1-2) to only 92 yards in the second half.
