Cole Beasley: QB Tony Romo is throwing with lots of velocity

Cole Beasley has been impressed with the progress Tony Romo has made in coming back from a compression fracture in his lower back.

Beasley played catch with Romo after practice last week, and said the Dallas Cowboys quarterback “had a lot of velocity” behind his throws.

“He’s throwing as good as ever,” Beasley said. “His ball was coming just like normal, maybe even more. It wasn’t just getting there or anything. He was cutting it loose. He looked good.

“He’s working, man.”

Owner Jerry Jones has said that Romo is throwing so well that he’s left bruises on people’s chests that’s he’s played catch with. However, Beasley laughed and assured he is not among that group.

“I catch with my hands,” Beasley said.

Romo, 36, is making progress, but there is no firm date on when he may return to practice, let alone game action.

The Cowboys find themselves in a unique situation with Romo on the mend and rookie quarterback Dak Prescott playing so well. The Cowboys are off to a 5-1 start, and some observers feel that they shouldn’t make a quarterback change whenever Romo is ready to return.

Hall of Fame quarterbacks such as Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman and Brett Favre have all voiced their opinions and were unanimous in saying that Prescott should remain the quarterback.

Beasley isn’t overly concerned with that decision, though.

“It’s something we can’t worry about,” said Beasley, who has 33 catches for 390 yards and three touchdowns so far this season. “Guys can’t worry about who’s going to be where. You’ve just got to focus on your individual job and take care of what you can control. We can’t control those decisions. It’s not our decision to make. What we do is just go out there and play ball. That’s how my approach is.”

Beasley is on pace for a 1,000-yard season, which would be the first time in his career to reach that mark.

“We’re winning right now. Nobody is worrying about anything. There’s nothing anything going on outside can do to take our minds off that,” he said. “Winning cures everything, so there’s no reason to focus on anything else other than just playing ball right now.”
