Carolina rookie cornerback Zack Sanchez set to make NFL debut

Zack Sanchez is on the move.

The Carolina Panthers rookie cornerback was promoted from the practice squad to the 53-man roster on Friday.

Now it appears that the former Keller Central High School star is set to make his NFL debut when the Panthers face Tampa Bay Monday night.

Only 46 of the 53 players can dress for games and Sanchez is expected to be one of the active players.

The NFL road has been a fast one for Sanchez.

He entered the NFL Draft after his junior season at Oklahoma and was taken in the fifth round by the Panthers. He was waived by the Panthers on Sept. 3 then signed to the practice squad the next day. He was on the practice squad until being promoted on Friday.

The Panthers released starting cornerback Bene Benwikere Friday, which opened up a spot for Sanchez.

Carolina’s secondary was burned by Atlanta, particularly Benwikere, last week when Matt Ryan passed for 503 yards and Julio Jones had 300 yards in receptions in the Falcons’ 48-33 win.

With Benwikere gone and James Bradberry being slowed by a turf toe, Sanchez will likely see extended playing time in his debut.
