Ice cream company and social justice advocate Ben & Jerry’s have taken a firm stance on the importance of Black lives. Yesterday they tweeted a picture of a simple phrase, Black Lives Matter, and captioned it, saying “Choosing to be silent in the face of such injustice is not an option.”

The Vermont-based company, which has a long history of social activism, had more to say than just a tweet. They outlined (and linked in the tweet to) 7 Ways We Know Systemic Racism Is Real.
In a statement on their website, they say that, “We’ve come to understand that to be silent about the violence and threats to the lives and well-being of black people is to be complicit in that violence and those threats.” They continue, asserting, “Systemic and institutionalized racism are the defining civil rights and social justice issues of our time.”
Many responded by celebrating Ben & Jerry’s, tweeting that despite their lactose intolerance, they would be buying multiple pints of the ice cream that day (the company’s twitter account swiftly responded that they have dairy-free options as well).
Others tweeted that they would be buying their first ever pints of Ben & Jerry’s, to which the Ben & Jerry’s twitter responded with “welcome to the family.”
Most were just happy that a large, well-known corporation publicly stated its support for Black lives while also acknowledging that saying “All Lives Matter” is inadequate.
“All lives do matter. But all lives will not matter until Black lives matter,” Ben & Jerry’s said.
@benandjerrys lactose intolerant. Buying like 5 ben and Jerry’s tomorrow.

As per usual, asserting that Black lives matter angered many a racist, and the responses were predictable. One tweet called Ben & Jerry’s, and all of those who support the Black Lives Matter movement, “bigots.” Another, who noted his non-white status, showed just how little he utilizes Google by calling the Black Lives Matter organization a “domestic terrorist organization.”
@benandjerrys thanks for saving me money by keeping you out of my freezer

@benandjerrys never going to buy Ben & Jerry’s again.

@benandjerrys BLM is a terrorist organization. Are you coming out with a new #BlackISIS flavor ?

As for Ben & Jerry’s detractors, they should look out for a new flavor inspired by them. It’ll probably leave a very salty taste in their mouths.
@benandjerrys oooooh the racists are BIG MAD at this tweet! 😂😂😂 pic.twitter.com/xyqIP6Bjgj
