Two people, including one employee, were killed Wednesday when a suspect opened fire at a restaurant in Wilmington, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.
According to the LAPD, at about 9:25 a.m. Joey Mendoza walked into the restaurant – located in the 1100 block of West Pacific Coast Highway – and fired several shots at the victim who was standing near the counter. An employee who was working behind the counter was also struck by stray gun fire.
Both victims were hit and collapsed at the scene.
Paramedics responded and pronounced one victim dead at the scene. The second victim was taken to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.
LAPD detectives identified Mendoza through surveillance video, witness statements and gang intelligence, officials said.
After serving a search warrant, Mendoza was arrested without incident.
Police said the handgun used in the shooting has not been found.
